Ten Chileans reach summit of the world’s tallest mountain after 57-day journey.A small group of Chileans were able to let out a well-deserved sigh of relief this Friday morning as they set foot on the summit of Mount Everest after days of putting their bodies on the line. The expedition of ten Chileans and ten local guides, headed by 52-year-old mountaineer and professor Rodrigo Jordan, became the fifth-ever Chilean team to conquer the 29,000-foot behemoth.

Mix-up in Court of Appeals leaves Chilean mayor suspended
Ñuñoa Mayor Pedro Sabat is suspended for not following orders.Pedro Sabat, the often controversial mayor of Santiago’s Ñuñoa neighborhood, was handed a 30-day suspension at half his salary by the Court of Appeals on Thursday. Sabat insisted that the suspension is unfounded and is the result of a mix up in paperwork. “It is simply a mistake”, the mayor told La Tercera.

Chile maintains 5 percent interest rate for fourth straight month
High domestic demand for copper helped to drive the Central Bank’s decision.
The Central Bank of Chile announced on Friday that it would maintain the country’s interest rate at a flat five percent for the fourth consecutive month. The decision was made amid uncertainty surrounding the future of the Eurozone economies and a consequential drop in the price of copper, Chile’s most important export.

Chile’s Consumer Service draws criticism for ending parking and bathroom fees.Chile’s National Consumer Service’s (Sernac) came under fire from Chile’s Conglomeration of Shopping Centers on Friday for its decision to put an end to parking and bathroom fees in shopping centers. “From our point of view, we have complied with absolutely every legal norm,” Manuel Melero, president of the Conglomeration of Shopping Centers said before sitting down with officials from Sernac and the Ministry of the Economy.

The resignation came as a reaction to the release by conservative deputies of a video that called Bachelet’s management of the situation into question.
